Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. Practical ways to Reduce your Carbon Footprint.

22 Feb

Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. Practical ways to Reduce your Carbon Footprint.

This month, which we should be celebrating the Love Month, our Site Director offers a different kind of twist … instead of the usual color for February which is red, we go green. Why? He introduced a site-wide campaign and tagged it as “Go Green in 2012!”. With this campaign, everybody is welcome to share their thoughts and suggestions on how to reduce carbon footprint. Well, everybody is inclined to join the contest. Why?

English: The carbon footprint.

That is because you will not only be helping mother earth its burden but also for a couple of iPod Touch to be given away!  Kewl isn’t it? Suggestions will be judged based on the following criteria: Practical application, cost reduction impact, carbon footprint reduction impact and ingenuity.

What is “Carbon Footprint” by the way?

Well, your carbon footprint is a representation of the effect you have on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gases you produce (measured in units of carbon dioxide). It is actually the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that you had on your day-to-day activities. If you still remember your elementary days, in its simpliest representation, as you inhale oxygen into your body, you exhale a comparable amount of carbon dioxide. What does that mean? That means, whether you like it or not, you will give out carbon dioxide.

Everyone has a responsibility to reduce their individual carbon footprint, and there are lots of ways to do so. As my share, I will give out some practical ways to reduce carbon footprint.

Say NO to Styro. Though some of us have found benefits of using styrofoams especially for us night folks who tend to stir a cup of coffee in order to keep us awake, very few might be aware of those harmful effects to our body, especially to the environment. First, let us know what are styros and what does it do. Styrofoam is made from polystyrene. Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic. Polystyrene is a light-weight material with very good insulation properties and is used in all types of products from cups that keep your beverages hot or cold to packaging material that keep your computers safe during shipping. That is the reason why it gained popularity and are widely used. Why it is not recommended for everyday use? Well, for those who are exposed regularly with styros, some of the acute health effects experienced include irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal effects. Chronic exposure affects the central nervous system showing symptoms such as depression, headache, fatigue, and weakness, and can cause minor effects on kidney function and blood. And why it is bad for the environment, well, basically, Styrofoam appears to last forever, almost! So, the next time you bump into the canteen and have a cup of coffee, give yourself and the environment a break, bring your mug with you and just “Say NO to styro!”.

To print or not to print. For Team Managers who are mostly doing the printing jobs, think twice and ask yourself “to print or not to print” before you click on that print icon. And before printing, make sure that you print only those important ones and for “business” purposes only. You can help reduce carbon emissions one is by using less electricity while printing, second emissions related to processing the papers that you use to print and third is the printer cartridge.

Drive my car. As popularized by The Beattles, you too can help reduce carbon footprint by using this phrase. Instead of driving your car everyday, why not take the shuttle. This will have a lot of advantages for you. First, you will help save energy, which is good for the environment and with your purse of course. Second, you can mingle with your peers while you are traveling, as oppose to only you while driving. And most importantly, you can take a nap while enjoying the ride. Well, if you really wanna drive your car, and wish you gonna be a star, then you can atleast use it alternately, say 3 times as week, depending on how you would like to use it.

Monitor off. When you step away from your desk or pod, especially on break times, make it a habit  to turn off the monitor. Try to calculate how much energy you can save by turning off the monitor for a 30-minute break, add another 30 minutes and another 15-minute break and multiply it by let’s say 400 users a day. That’s a lot isn’t it?

Grow your own. If you have a garden or even a small piece of land on your backyard, you can grow your own vegetables, trees and other green-leafy plants. Imagine each person grows 1 each and how would it help reducing carbon emissions. Did you know that a single tree can absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime? So start digging and planting some of them now, you may save some for you and the whole community. Just make sure to use plenty of manure and natural pesticides.

Save Water. Did you know that by 2025, major cities of the Philippines like Manila will experience massive water shortages? Well, that’s a fact and we should act now before its too late.

Be an influence to others. One of the things that you should be doing to help is to become a role model. If you are already doing these things, take an initiative to share information about recycling, energy conservation and reducing carbon footprint with your friends, neighbors and co-workers. And make sure to practice what you preach.

These are just simple and practical ways for us to help mother earth from its burden. Practice a sustainable and a healthy lifestyle. A sustainable lifestyle is one that does not use more natural resources at a faster rate than the earth makes available. That means, we should make wise decisions about our environment and always try to find ways to recycle whenever possible. We should all be aiming towards a more sustainable lifestyle  and say “Go Green in 2012!”.

Choosing a Topic For Your Blog

27 Jan

It’s been a couple of days past but still I haven’t figured out what specific topic should I be posting on my blog. As I browse through a couple of sites, I was able to discover some of those blogs that discusses different ways for you to choose the appropriate topic.

Choosing the right topic is a make or break to your blog. It could either entice the reader and be interested to read all the way through the bottom… or simply not read any at all. So it is extremely important that you be cautious to select the topic that you wish to write since it would be the heart and soul all through out.

A successful blog is a collaboration of a creative mind, commitment, passion, time and effort. Choosing the best topic to write would be the initial stage for you to accomplish your goals, which is to lure your readers to read your blog from the beginning up to the end.

I have listed here some basic tips that you can emulate when choosing the topic that could boost your blog and later on reach your ultimate goal.

Choose a Topic You’re Definitely Passionate About

It’s given and it’s the most obvious one. Though you can also write with other things in mind, it would be wise enough to write those things that you are passionate about. This will not only keep you motivated but also drive your confidence as all the information that you will be sharing will reflect on how you compose each sentence. As for me, I am very passionate about current events, news, politics, showbiz, cars, gadgets, etc.

Catchy and Attention-grabber

Choosing a catchy topic will definitely grab the attention of your readers. This could be anything that is controversial and intriguing since most people love controversy. The more controversial, the better.

Popular and Up-to-Date

One thing that you should know when writing blogs is NOT to write an unpopular and outdated topics. If you want your blog to be read, it should be updated and that most readers could relate. One practical example is that, when writing let’s say a Hollywood starlet that was linked to his boyfriend, and its all over in the news then all of a sudden they broke up but since you are not updated, you may haven’t known and go on with your blog. The result?…well, your sweat and effort would be useless.

You Should Know Your Target Audience

When writing blogs, often times, we tend to forget the geographical areas in which we want to share those information that we want to impart. Since I am passionate about politics, I wouldn’t want to write information about local politics when my target audience would be from the US or other parts of the world. I should not be talking about Pnoy but the likes of Barrack Obama, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, etc. Also, if your blog is about Politics, do not mix it with Fashion, Travel, etc. since it would be senseless.

Put Yourself on Their Shoes

Write a blog as if you’re the one searching for and reading it. Try to imagine and visualize what would you like to know and see on websites that you will be visiting. But make it a point to visualize on a larger scale and not on specific information. But also checkout the balance on the information that you will be presenting. You wouldn’t want an information overload to your audience. Balance would be the key.

The Bottomline

Just be yourself and “blog” the things that you’re passionate about. Make sure it grabs the attention of your readers for them to read up to the bottom. Your blog should target a specific audience so that they can relate. It should not be outdated. Just imagine that you are reader. From there, you will be able to visualize if there’s a room for improvement. Make a list and correct them on your next blog. Enjoy blogging! *^_^*

SOPA and PIPA: What’s in it for you?

20 Jan
Having trouble accessing your favorite sites lately? Have you noticed those black ribbons and sites with total blackout stamps and posts that say “Imagine a world without free knowledge.”? Well, this is a protest against a popular bill of US Congress called SOPA ( Stop Online Piracy Act ) and PIPA ( Protect Intellectual Property Act ) which is the parallel bill being considered by the Senate. Detailed information about SOPA and PIPA can be found on Wikipedia.

What are SOPA and PIPA and what’s in it for you?

From its definition itself, it is built to demolish piracy. Both legislation would allow the US Justice Department and content owners to seek court orders requiring search engines to block results associated with piracy. Also, advertisers and ISPs would be forbidden from doing business with infringers that are based outside the US. This would be a good indication to those content providers like movie makers, artists, etc. however at some point this would also bring down those online companies that rely heavily on customers posting online.

According to BBC News, the bills propose that anyone found guilty of streaming copyrighted content without permission 10 or more times within six months should face up to five years in jail. The US government and rights holders would have the right to seek court orders against any site accused of “enabling or facilitating” piracy. This could theoretically involve an entire website being shut down because it contains a link to a suspect site. US-based internet service providers, payment processors and advertisers would be outlawed from doing business with alleged copyright infringers. Sopa also calls for search engines to remove infringing sites from their results – Pipa does not include this provision.”

Global protest

Opponents warned that once this bill has passed into law, this could later on cripple the internet worldwide and may soon shutdown all domains that violates their proposed law. On an exaggerated perspective, as if this is what happened on Kurt Russell’s 1996 movie Escape from L.A, wherein, all means of technology worldwide are shut down by the satellites within seconds. Incidentally, this information came from Wikipedia which is one of the internet companies that initiate the coordinated service blackout to protest SOPA and PIPA along with other companies such as search giant Google, user-generated news site Reddit, comedy website network Cheezburger, AOL, and other large internet companies.

Hollywood vs. Silicon Valley

Based from, these bills have pitted the entertainment industry against the technology industry. “Hollywood” has a legitimate interest in protecting its intellectual property. Not only are profits at stake but so are jobs. Thousands of Americans make their living by dreaming up content and selling it to the world and piracy does in fact take money out of their pockets.  Silicon Valley has invested billions in creating companies that freely distribute information. While Google and every other Silicon Valley company must respect copyrights, they thrive on helping people find what they want. If, suddenly, every web site that had links to other sites had to worry that they could be in violation of the law by linking to a “banned” site, it could put undo pressure on these companies. There is also worry that SOPA and PIPA could be abused and lead to censorship for purposes other than intellectual property protection.

It must be killed.

According to Wikipedia, On October 28, 2011, the EFF called the bill a “massive piece of job-killing Internet regulation,” and said, “This bill cannot be fixed; it must be killed.” Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, spoke out strongly against the bill, stating, “The bill attempts a radical restructuring of the laws governing the Internet,” and that “It would undo the legal safe harbors that have allowed a world-leading Internet industry to flourish over the last decade. It would expose legitimate American businesses and innovators to broad and open-ended liability. The result will be more lawsuits, decreased venture capital investment, and fewer new jobs.”

You should be aware. Be an advocate of change.

The danger of not being well-informed is like going to a war without bringing any rifle with you. It only takes a couple of minutes to read important news like this one. The next thing you know it, you might no longer access those areas that you regularly visit. So make it a point to read and take the lead, be an advocate of change and tell the whole world what’s your point of view.

To blog or not to blog…

14 Jan

To blog or not to blog…That was a question, I guess for most of us, especially for a newbie blogger like me… I’ve been getting a lot of feedbacks, both good or bad, from friends who are already into blogging. Some are earning huge amount of money and some are not. Some are doing it as a hobby and some are doing it for business.

What is blog or blogging?

But what’s blogging anyway? From one of my favorite site says, blog or blogging is ” a Web site containing the writer’s or group of writers’ own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other Web sites.” With that alone, I can say that blogging is like a diary or a handwritten journal wherein you can write in everything that you want to, might it be personal or not. The only difference is that you are sharing those information to almost virtually anyone that has access to web.

Breaking dawn.

Blogging can be easy for some but a bit troublesome to others (that includes me, tsk tsk). If you’re not a born writer and still starting to write blogs (that’s me again), well, you have a long way to go. But as that old saying goes, you wouldn’t know it unless you try. So I guess this would be my first and hopefully not the last. As the twilight saga’s subtitle says, it’s the “Breaking Dawn”.

Why some people turn into blogging.

Some people, just like me, are turning into blogging as a way to express their feelings or opinions into something interesting. It could be something that they eat, places that they travel, gadgets that they purchase, etcetera, etcetera. So as you can see, blogging can be everything that you do. For as long as you will be able to share your experiences in a more creative or entertaining manner, so people can relate, I guess that would be the essence of blogging.

Its an opportunity to learn something new.

I started blogging because I want to improve my ability to write. When I say “write”, what I mean is the quality of the contents, the information that you want to share, the feeling that you want readers to feel when they read your work. Ever since, I do not have that much knowledge about writing. The choice of words, the grammar, the topics to discuss, etcetera. This is an opportunity that I want to overcome and later on, improve. It’s a work in progress…(crossing fingers)

Blogging for a living.

Hmmmm…I guess that is what most aim for. The “cachings” that can you get with every click on every ad that you have on your blog. As what I’ve said earlier, some are already earning huge amounts, just by blogging. How are they doing it? Simple…by posting ads throughout their blogs. With just a click of those ads, you will earn revenues. Though its quite small amount as it seems, the accumulated amount can be gigantic. Some old bloggers already have a way to strategize their ads in such a way that it will earn big.

Passion for blogging.

Since the dawn of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, blogging become a global phenomenon as well. Through local internet shops, at home, Starbucks, you can see teens holding their gadgets and if they are not in Facebook or Twitter, you will see that they are writing their blogs. Staring a blog can be very challenging and tedious. This is the toughest phase that you and me need to overcome. So how come, others were able to do it. Well, it’s their “passion”. This serves as their driving force to write creative contents.

So, what do you wanna do? Would you wanna blog to earn something and enjoy what you are doing? Or doing nothing at all?

To blog or not to blog. Your choice! I just did.
